Chronicles of Koko 3

“Koko, Fetch!”

Koko gradually became a menace to us all. She was still mean little Koko after all. She barked at our visitors and paraded the hallway like she paid our rent. Koko had hierarchy of respect; top of the ladder was of course her father, Hamza. Then Hamza’s best friend Kola and their other close friends. The rest of us in the house followed far behind. Koko had been taught to “fetch!” The things she really loved to fetch were plastic bottles, Hamza’s palm slippers’ and persons. Koko also had a strong grip, such that whatever she got between her teeth would be extremely hard to get back. Her grip was so strong that you could grab whatever she had in her teeth, lift her up with it, and she would still not let go. We all imagined her holding on to one’s flesh like that; it was something we all didn’t want to test.
The guys started using Koko as a weapon against us girls. If any of them wanted to bring a girl into the hose without us seeing her, they would simply point at us and say “Koko, Fetch!”, that would send us all scattering into our rooms, or the closest room.  We learnt not to offend the guys because of Koko. Once she got the command, she would pursue till she catches up. Hamza’s friends had sent Koko on a “fetch” mission. The victim had run into my room to hide. Unfortunately, I came out of the kitchen at the same time. I had to go to my room because I wanted to pee. Koko was seated at the door waiting for her victim to come out. I was on the verge of peeing on myself already. I could also hear my phone ringing in the room. After a while, I finally mustered courage to move towards the door. Koko tilted her head, looked at me and gave a low growl. It should have stopped there but I guess Koko was already frustrated at this point. She growled again and stood up. I got scared as she started walking towards me. I did not know when I started begging her. “Koko please, oh, please!”
That didn’t walk. I kept walking backwards as she came forward. Then I started begging and singing.
“Koko inugo, Koko biko. Step back o, Koko love, Koko boo. Aunty Koko please.”
Then Koko started running. I practically ducked into the kitchen and shut the door fast. Few minutes later, I heard Kola and his friends laughing outside the door. They opened the kitchen door and were all seriously laughing. I didn’t even care; I was scared and I had to pee. That is not a very good combo. I looked around for Koko before I moved an inch. I saw her on a leash, and then I ran as fast as I could to the toilet. When I came out, Kola and co had started calling Koko “Koko boo, aunty Koko”. That is how we all came to call her Koko boo.
